I dont want my daughter to have a broken home. If you changed the topic at the point when you observed stress or anxiety in response to your questions, you would see the person relax because they are aware of the consequences of their lying. The thing to look for is eye contact that feels piercing.

The stress from telling lies may cause adrenaline or the constriction of vocal chords, leading to an increased need for water. One of the ways pathological liars retain control is to keep their victims isolated from people who might tell them the truth.

The Truth Behind Pathological and Compulsive Liars

A compulsive liar is someone who does not have any motive for lying, he does this only for effect and out of habit. His first instinct and response to any query is to lie. Researches show that habitual liars as they are referred to have very low self-esteem, and thus, make up false stories about themselves to appear important and superior. Sometimes, habitual lying is a result of a mental disorder that a person could be suffering from. Denying the fact that they lie, coming up with more lies in order to cover up their previous ones, enjoying the reactions they garner from their lies, trying very hard to impress others, often forgetting their own false stories, and coming up with different versions of the same story--these are all signs of compulsive lying. Psychotherapy and counseling is identified as an effective treatment for people who suffer from compulsive lying disorder. However, because people with this disorder live in denial and do not recognize the fact that they lie, it is up to the people close to them to convince them that they have a problem which needs to be addressed immediately. A psychiatrist will also examine the person for any kind of mental disorders. The treatment is usually a combination of psychotherapy, counseling, and medication, including role-plays, practical assignments, and counseling. Dealing with a person who lies compulsively is stressful. But one needs to be caring and supportive of the person. However, if the person refuses to undertake treatment or even accept that he has a problem, then despite repeated attempts by friends and family, you should stay away from the situation.

Know not to trust behavior in the heat of the moment. For example, instead of saying, He said he was told that management was planning to cut the staff in half, simply say, I want to clear up some misconceptions you may have heard. And if you bring it up to the person and they say it's your fault, or no it didn't happen, just know there's something very wrong going on. At this point in our brain's development, we learn that we have an incredibly versatile and powerful tool at our disposal — our language — and we can use it to actually play with reality and affect the outcome of what's happening. Upon tasting the spotlight it becomes self-reinforcing and the lies grow bigger each time just to keep on being the center of attention.
